LATEST NEWS: Current Telfordians make contact...

Visitors:

29.06.09: Website editor reports...
A current incumbent of Telford Hall, called Poppy Hoskins, made contact with me a few weeks ago, and was very enthusiastic about the idea of an Old Telfordians reunion at Telford Hall itself. This has been suggested by one or two "old 'uns" in the past, but nothing came of it. If there is an appetite for this, then I could push for it and see where it takes us.

As a not entirely logical consequence of that I actually set up an Old Telfordians group on Facebook. It would be good for as many people as possible to join up (what do you mean, you don't use Facebook? Get with it!). To be honest, I see the group on Facebook as being an easier future for web-based communication than this website. It has several advantages: free, not reliant on one person (me!), ability to upload photos, set up events, communicate, etc. Sign up or login from here. There are over 100 members of the Old Telfordians group already as Poppy encouraged everyone in Telford to join up. She's obviously very persuasive!

29.06.09: Jim & Jane
Way back in 1980 several of us took a trip to Calais and at the last reunion Jane Pickering "fondly" remembered being dangled over the size by Jim O'Mahoney. Here we have the original photo of that moment and a recreation of it at the reunion (either Jim's got weaker or ...).

23.04.09: Jane Pickering and the mystery poem
Jane Pickering (now Staynesforth) writes: "It was great to see everyone at the reunion and I will definitely try and attend again. As promised, i have sent the poem about the sunbathing incident outside block 10 that was much discussed at the reunion. no- one as yet has claimed authorship although Steve Floyd thought that 'it might be him'! See poem here.

29.03.09: 2009 Re-union at The Lord Moon of the Mall, Whitehall, London.
Attendees (15): Hilary Shaw, Eric Lange, Dave Hedley, Jim O'Mahoney, Kanagendra, Mark Rimmington, Steve Floyd, Garry Pierrepont, Sarah Spedding, Bev Sparrow, Steve Saunders, Christine Wainman, Jane Pickering, Nick Orsman, Nigel Morton.

19.03.09: Elvis Ain't Dead (but he must be turning in his grave).
Check out this clip of a well-known Old Telfordians personality (no, not Adrian Chiles). Turn the brightness down, otherwise you might be blinded by the reflection off the gold medallion!

YouTube are removing all professional video clips, but this one has eluded them so far!

11.03.09: Hello to Mike Kneale.
Mike was at Loughborough from 1966 to 1970. [Sorry, Mike, but that makes you our oldest contact so far! - Ed.] Mike came across the website via the Lufbra Uni site. He says: "I resided in Telford from 1966 through 1970. I now live in Houston, Texas ... have been here since 1975.
We did have a Lufbra reunion here in Houston some years ago [very impressive - Ed.]; there are actually a couple of dozen alumni in and around the Houston area.
Looking at the website it appears I might be the most "senior" contact, but that might inspire more pre-1970s' alumni to send in their contact details. See the Contacts page for his details.

08.03.09: Hello to Andrew Nelson.
Andrew was at Loughborough from 1975 to 1979. He is currently living in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, moving to Calgary soon. He is Branch Manager for Matrikon Inc’s Calgary office. See the Contacts page for his details.

09.01.09: Helen Gee (nee Thornton) writes:
Thanks for sending details of reunions - unfortunately, being a northerner, London reunions are out, but it's nice to be updated. We'll have to organise something north (much further north!) of Watford, particularly as it's a 30 year-ish anniversary - any volunteers?
I've attached some pictures. Some background - I was at Lufbra 1975 - 1978. Paul Shields in the photos (1973 - 1976) sadly died in November and those of us who were friends of his had a mini reunion at his funeral - it was 30 years since most of us had met up - Mike Bowman, Chris Mitchell and Caspar Weston.

23.10.08: Graham Matthew has been in touch:
Good to see some familiar names & photos. I "resided" at Telford from 1978 to 1982. Was in Lufbra last year for the 25th reunion of the 1982 Chemical Engineering students. I am living in Nelson, B.C., Canada with my wife Anita & 9 year old son Samuel.

20.09.08: Cathy Fletcher found this:
I am delighted to give you the news, in advance of publication, that Loughborough University has been named “University of the Year” in the Sunday Times University Guide 2008. The guide will be published with the Sunday Times this Sunday, September 21st. For more information, please go to the University’s website: www.lboro.ac.uk.

Loughborough has previously been shortlisted three times for this honour, more than any other University. Our success this year is in recognition of our all-round excellence. This accolade has been awarded in honour of the quality of our teaching and research, our consistent high rankings in the National Student Survey, our sixth Queen’s Anniversary prize and our outstanding success in sport.

I am convinced there is simply no place like Loughborough when it comes to being at University. The dynamism and vibrancy of our student body is such a crucial part of what we are. This award celebrates the “Loughborough Experience” we all cherish and value.

I hope you share with me a sense of pride in Loughborough - a University with a great history and a bright future. Kindest regards.

Professor Shirley Pearce
Vice-Chancellor and President

22.04.08: Sad News
As the editor of this website, it occasionally falls to me to deliver sad news to the Old Telfordians community. The death of an Old Telfordian is quite obviously the saddest possible news. Today, I have news of a death that is even more poignant than usual.

I have to announce that Julia Foreman (previously Gosney, nee Dennison) died over the weekend of 19/20th April.

This is particulary sad because her first husband Pete Gosney (also from Telford Hall, 1976-1980) died in 1999. Julia was re-married in October 2006 - to Pat Foreman. Pete and Julia had two children: Lizzy & Luke.

I'm sure all Old Telfordian thoughts are with Pat and the children, and we offer them our sincere sympathy and best wishes at this difficult time.
